From Outlawed to Officially Recognised
For four decades after independence the Mau Mau remained outlawed under colonial-era legislation. The ban was lifted in 2003; in 2022 the Government of Kenya established the Office of the Mau Mau Secretariat, giving the veterans’ cause a permanent institutional home.
The Office anchors litigation, diplomatic lobbying, reparative justice and veteran livelihood support within government structures, and coordinates with national ministries and all 47 County Commissioners.
Government Entities We Work With
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Collaborates with the Mau Mau Secretariat on diplomatic lobbying, international reparative justice efforts, and engagement with the British Government on compensation claims.
Ministry of Culture
Partners with the Mau Mau Secretariat on preserving the liberation legacy, documenting oral histories, and establishing heritage sites and memorials honoring freedom fighters.
Ministry of Forestry
Works with the Mau Mau Secretariat on protecting and preserving forests that served as hideouts and bases during the liberation struggle, recognizing their historical significance.
47 County Commissioners
County-level government officials working directly with local Mau Mau leaders to implement compensation, documentation, and legacy preservation programs.

Overseeing county administration and coordinating with County Commissioners on Mau Mau-related initiatives and veteran support programs.

Recognition Milestones
Establishment of Office of Mau Mau Secretariat
Creation of the Office of the Mau Mau Secretariat which provide institutional recognition, preserving the liberation legacy, litigation, diplomatic lobbying, reparative justice and support for veteran livelihood.
County Commissioner Collaboration Begins
Hon. Anastasia Wanjiku Njuguna successfully lobbied all 47 County Commissioners to work directly with Mau Mau leaders in their respective counties, marking a historic achievement in grassroots advocacy.
Veteran Registration and Documentation
County-level initiatives launched to identify, register, and document Mau Mau veterans across all 47 counties. Oral history collection programs established to preserve firsthand accounts.
Support Services Implementation
County governments began providing direct support services to aging veterans, including healthcare assistance, poverty alleviation programs, and social welfare coordination.
Legacy Preservation Programs
Development of county-specific memorials, educational initiatives, and cultural programs to honor local Mau Mau heroes and preserve their stories for future generations.
Ongoing Compensation Advocacy
Continued advocacy through the Mau Mau Secretariat for comprehensive compensation for freedom fighters and their descendants, building on the framework established through government collaboration.

1. Veteran Identification and Registration
Systematic county-by-county registration of Mau Mau veterans, creating comprehensive databases to ensure all freedom fighters are documented and can access support services.
2. Historical Documentation Projects
Government-supported oral history collection, archival research, and documentation of Mau Mau struggle, ensuring historical accuracy and preservation for future generations.
3. Healthcare and Welfare Support
Provision of healthcare services, medical assistance, and welfare support to aging veterans through county health departments and social services.
4. Memorial and Commemoration Programs
Development of national and county-level memorials, annual commemoration events, and public recognition ceremonies honoring Mau Mau sacrifices.
5. Educational Integration
Integration of accurate Mau Mau history into national curriculum, development of educational materials, and support for school programs teaching about the freedom struggle.
6. Compensation Framework Development
Ongoing work to establish comprehensive compensation frameworks for Mau Mau fighters and their descendants, building on lessons from the 2013 UK settlement.
Recognition Is Not Yet Compensation
